there’s not a whole lot of information online about either of the designers whose work is pictured here. gerd rothman created the gold collar seen top, and jean despres designed the ring below. i do know that rothman began creating conceptual work in the early seventies. i was initially drawn to the simple and graphic form of this necklace, and was further intrigued to learn that each of the discs contains the fingerprints of members of a family.

jean despres was an art deco designer who palled around with modigliani and di chirco in paris. warhol ended up being a fan. i’ve really been feeling the graphic form of art deco lately, but a lot of it doesn’t age very well. with these two pieces you have the best of both worlds– a contemporary, conceptual artist that draws from the tradition, and a deco piece that looks as if it could have been made today.

there are books available about each on amazon… gerd rothman: jewellry and jean despres: jeweler, maker and designer of the machine age. I haven’t seen these yet, but they’ve been added to the ever growing wish list.

i was lucky enough to see blondie perform last weekend. if asked to list favorite style icons, debbie harry would certainly be up toward the top. the clothing she wore was only a small part of that appeal. some of it legitimately looked great… some of it was insane. but she’s just one of those people that can look amazing in anything. the fact that she always looked effortless, and wasn’t afraid to roll around onstage in what she wore makes it all the more intriguing. she still looks fantastic, and in googling recent images, it seems like she’s continuing to work that eccentric clothing sensibility. picking favorite images of her in her heyday was super hard, but here are a few. if you get a chance to see blondie live, don’t pass it up.

i’ve never really been excited about september in terms of school starting and all that, but i do always really look forward to the massive fall magazines. i’ve been trying to wane my addiction, but i feel like september is my last valid excuse to just go for it… i can say that my feelings toward fashion in general have been a little lackluster lately, but i’m starting to stockpile the fall mags, and am hoping to find some new and exciting inspiration. in the meantime i’ve been feeling a little wistful for my old art school uniform of paint covered jeans and t-shirts, and have been looking to inspiration from other sources. the selby’s tour of robert longo’s studio has been supplying me with fantasies of forgetting fashion entirely, and just getting dirty and making things.

there are a lot of great bowie images out there, but this tribute poster by graphic designer edwin servass really stopped me in my tracks. it’s just so great on so many levels. check out more work on his site.

a few snapshots from marfa, and a couple desert inspired items i’m now after… google “prada marfa” and you’ll find a number of images prettier than mine, but i kind of like this one. it was taken during a small break in a torrential rainstorm. i picked up an agate keychain for super cheap that i plan on turning into a necklace like the dannijo ones upper right. and woah, aesa is now doing cut agate necklaces in geometric shapes. love it. bottom center is a dan flavin flourescent light installation at the chinati foundation. and the ballroom marfa is a must see art and performance space if you’re in the area… i’m already dreaming up my next excursion. details to come soon.

the old blog has been a little neglected lately… between attempting to enjoy the summer somewhat, and then time spent recovering from the 107 degree temperatures, i haven’t been in a fashion or internet kind of mood really… as of tomorrow i’m heading out west, on a road trip to marfa. i’m planning my desert wardrobe, and looking forward to lounging by the pool at the thunderbird hotel, checking out the art, and hopefully the marfa lights. maybe some interesting off the wall shopping if i’m lucky…

i’ve covered this ground before, but the new ysl leather gem earrings convinced me it’s a good time to revisit. leather jewelry, or leather wrapped jewelry is not very google-able. you end up with a lot of not so cute tribal stuff and weirdness. but there are a couple of standbys that you can always count on. those would be, of course annie costello brown and natalia brilli. they never cease to amaze. choosing one piece from each is hard, because i would pretty much kill for everything from both of them. house of harlow is kind of hard for me to wrap my head around. i really like the two pieces pictured here, and pretty much the whole line. i’m never entirely sure what my opinion is of nicole richie, but it’s a little hard to picture her as a “jewelry designer.” but the art deco with an edge vibe seems pretty unique, and works for me. and wendy nichol’s gold and leather hoops are a simple and great take on a classic.

not only is luisaviaroma in my opinion, the best edited online boutique, i accidentally discovered that if you time your screenshots right, you’ll get some cool effects without even having to deal with photoshop. a few of my favorites… left is jil sander, top is christopher kane, and bottom is gareth pugh. have fun, kids.
