killing me

the kills played here last night.  sadly, we were not there.  but just for fun, here’s this photo i love of jamie from hedi slimane’s diary.

for something entirely different

a girl can’t obsess about all fashion all the time.  when i need a change of pace from planning my ideal wardrobe, i start on decorating my fantasy abode.  here are a few of my favorite chair options.  from left to right:  the warren platner armchair, the brilliant chair by robby e francesca cantarutti, the paulistano armchair (this is a dwr exclusive.  for some reason right now they only have it in an unattractive missoni fabric.  i have to believe that sooner or later they’ll bring back the leather version), and the tropicalia by moroso patricia urquiola.  these are practical and escapism at the same time.  what more could you ask for?

a winning combination

when planning outfits, i tend to start with accessories and go from there.  these kurt geiger heels and this fabulous mcqueen bag would make any outfit look amazing.  i think this combo would be perfect for a big job interview with a black pencil skirt and maybe westwood-ish blazer.  or you could go low key with jeans, a black button up and a mess of gold chains.

and by the way, if you haven’t already, go and check out the outnet.  it’s an online outlet courtesy of the good people at net-a-porter.   doubtful, but maybe the mcqueen bag will make it there some day…

keep it appropriate. it’s easter.

we saw morrissey last night!  first time for both of us.  i’ve been meaning to see him forever, and he put on a good show. he looked and sounded great, and had no less than four outfit changes, starting out in a tux. sadly, no cameras were allowed, but i thought this classic pic was sort of festive.

new heights

this editorial is already making the rounds, and with good reason.  these are the most striking fashion photos i’ve seen in a while.  from the april vogue china, shot by solve sundsbo.  see the rest on fotodecadent.

on a vision quest

saw these silver converse by john varvatos in the barney’s coop mailer this week and became torn. i love them, but seems like something i should attempt to diy first. maybe i’ll find time for that this weekend.

fashion and distortion

erwin blumenfeld was a german born photographer who took pictures his entire life, but only began fashion photography shortly before his fortieth birthday.  he worked with vogue, harper’s bazaar and did advertising images for a number of major brands.  these images are from the 30s and 40s when he was focused on exploring abstraction and distortion.  i think these are really amazing, and timeless enough that they could be at home today in the pages of dazed and confused.  showstudio has a great summary of his life and work where you can see more.

plans for summer

i do know that technically there’s still a ways to go before summer, and it’s even snowing still in parts of the country, but clothing wise, i’m so over the cold weather.  while it actually has been spring-like here in texas, with warm days and chilly nights, any sort of in-between weather here is fleeting, and soon enough we’ll be sweating our asses off.  i can’t help but think that the preen check lantern dress might be the most perfect summer dress ever.  pair with the chloe saturina bootie, marc by marc jacobs shoulder bag and wendy nichol earrings for brunch and a day of shopping.  i don’t condone flip flops in public, even if it is summer, but feel free to replace the heels with black flats to run down to the 7-11 for one of my summertime staples, a coke slurpee.

beyond the basics

looking to upgrade your favorite t-shirt?  the vena cava pyramidion shirt is the perfect solution.  it’s ultra thin and slouchy with a lace back insert, and the perfect shade of gray.  pair with a mini and heels for dancing on hot summer nights or denim cut-offs and wraparound sunglasses for a casual afternoon on a party barge.

how could you be so heartless

the perks of being in austin during sxsw?  free parties, free alcohol, maybe some good bands if you’re in the right place at the right time…  we never expected to get to see a kanye west double feature.  rumors had been flying around that he’d be the special guest at either the fader or the perez hilton party.  turns out both were true.  we started out the evening at perez to find out who the scheduled special guest was around 8:00.  well, that turned out to be the indigo girls.  yikes. we spent most of their set hiding in the vip lounge.  after that was ladyhawke.  they were very cool, and she looked casually cute in a nirvana t-shirt and buffalo plaid flannel shirt.  perez seemed kooky and likable, and introduced all the bands wearing a replica of aretha franklin’s inauguration hat in pink with rhinestones.

after ladyhawke, we hoofed it the six blocks over to the fader fort just in time for kanye’s first song.  set was great, and he was joined by kid cudie, erica badu and quite a few others.  the crowd was super into it, and some girl came around handing out heart stickers during heartless.

we stayed for the 45 minute or so set, and then decided to go back to perez in time to catch beyonce’s little sis solange. she had kind of a 60’s girl group feel, and was cute in a marc jacobs-ish looking skirt, although i don’t think it was. after solange was little boots who was really fun and dance-y.  i just checked out her site for the first time.  it seems cool and she has a post referencing stumbling home in louboutin heels, a matthew williamson dress, and mcqueen bag.  my kind of girl…  last night she was wearing a gold lame dress and big purple necklace. after that during rye rye’s set, who were really good, but we don’t have pictures, jd noticed that we were standing about five feet from kanye’s girlfriend amber. then we realized kanye was close by with his back to us watching the show.  people started to notice and it got kind of crazy paparazzi style until rye rye’s set ended, and perez went onstage to announce that kanye was the secret secret guest.  kanye posted more pics of the perez show on his blog this morning, and there’s also live footage from the fader event.  after that the night sort of devolved into a red bull and vodka induced blur.  we did hear at about three in the morning that there was a rumor of some third secret kanye show that night at the red bull moon tower somewhere.  like woah.  not sure yet if that was true, but we decided best to end on a high note, and not end up driving around trying to find it. good times all around.

(ash wore her diy studded converse, which she’ll be posting more pics of soon, and jd wore his john varvatos studded converse. all pictures by jd.)
